The first meeting at Lambton, for Gentleman riders only, took place in 1821 at Lambton Park near Chester-le-Street in County Durham. The inaugural meeting, organised by Mr John George Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham (1792-1840), took place on Thursday 18th October 1821. Notable riders and supporters of the meeting were the second Earl of Wilton and the Duke of Portland. Extraordinary meetings followed, including the 1824 meeting when no less than 40 races were contested over the 4 day racing festival. Meetings continued for 4 more years, with the annual highlight being the Gold Cup. The final card took place on Thursday 27th October 1825.

The Normanby Mile

The Silver trophy shown opposite, valued at 100 Guineas, was of height 15 inches, standing on a Silver Gilt Stand of height 3 1 2/ inches and was presented to Lambton Park races by the Honourable Edward Petre in 1822 as the prize for a Handicap Sweepstake of 5 Guineas.
In 1822 the race was won by the brown gelding Tom Paine owned by Mr D Rowley and ridden by Mr T Sykes, beating a field of 13 others.
The next year the Lambton Park Race Company had acquired the trophy and had it inscribed with ’The Gold Cup, value 100 Guineas, added by the Lambton Racing Club to a Handicap Sweepstake of 5 Guineas each’. That year it was won by an aged brown horse Whynot owned by Lord Normanby and ridden by Lord Wilton, beating 10 others.

Course today On Lambton Park, with the land being known as ‘the racecourse’ for most of the next century, even recorded as such when cavalry were billeted there in 1915.
